Not in Kansas anymore
Changing locations from a small town in Kansas to the mountainous desert region of New Mexico has been pleasant for me. The winding curling roads in the mountain areas made me a bit nervous, even though I was not driving. Then we stayed in Abq for a week, not intended to stay, but I drove in the big city and got through it, and found people helpful and polite. Especially on the VA hospital campus, people were friendly like a small town and I never once was afraid. My dog Midnight even made a few friends.
Out destination was Hobbs. Now that we have been here for a couple weeks, I have found the pace of people very slow, except on the highway and streets. In the stores, I see no one really gets in a hurry. Compared to my hometown in Smith Center, Kansas, people are very laid back here. In Smith Center, we are always in a hurry. Hurry while grocery shopping, hurry while doing errands. We hurry in Kansas.
I have seen things in Hobbs like boards on the highway that have been dropped and have stayed there for a week. Where is the highway or state department? Trash in the street? Does everyone in Hobbs own a pit bull? That scares me more than living in a bigger town.
I also see the poverty and run down homes. Not much of that in Smith Center, Kansas, since the economic development has houses burnt or torn down if in bad condition.
People in Hobbs are friendly. I hear people honk, at me, at friends; greet each other in stores like a small town should. I like Hobbs so far, though my time here will be short.
